Today lists up there with the TOP BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. :)

Ms. Godbold and the whole class were super sweet today about making by 33rd birthday special. Or as the kids all thought... my 40th or 70th birthday. haha

Our day began with chocolate and powdered donuts. YUM!! Then we all received cool glasses from Ms. Godbold. VERY COOL!! Finally, at Recess we all ate Swiss Cakes and Vanilla Ice Cream. haha The kids were very sugared up and still well behaved!  We have the BEST CLASS.:)

Hope everyone has a Birthday Celebration just as great as mine. :)
Thank you for all the sweet birthday wishes!!!

~We still have a few Progress Report Tests to complete~
Resources for the week are: Monday-P.E., Tuesday-MUSIC w/ Broach and then Wednesday-ART w/ Miller. Friday is Silly Sock Day. Please send in a solid color t-shirt for us to decorate for the International Culture Fair. The shirts must be sent in by Friday, May 9th. :)

Below is what we will be focusing on in class:
Reading: We will be reading the books Move Over, ROVER! by Karen Beaumont and The Mitten by Jan Brett. We will be discussing the meaning of words in the text, along with the main topics of each. On Friday we will compare the two stories. :)  Our Word Family is the -ake family, our blend is ch-, our vowel focus is letter o (short sound & long sound) and our new Sight Words are did, find, who, first.  Here is a link to the ch- blend power point I made. :)

At home, ask your child about the vocabulary discussed in the books. Ask them about similarities in the books and differences in them too.If your child has trouble answering any of the questions, please have them watch the videos to remind them of what occurs in the books.

Writing: We are revisiting Response to Literature. We will be writing about parts of books we like, parts of books we don't like and discussing connections.  (The last time we had this writing genre we had to focus on Eric Carle books. This time we will have various types of Literature by different Authors.)
At home, please remind your child even though the genre has changed, we still need to be strong writers. We need to remember spaces, capitalization, punctuation and using our sounds! :)

Science/Social Studies: We moved a little bit quicker through Living and Non-Living than the Curriculum Guide thought we would. :) So this week we will be discussing Green Houses and growing lima beans in Ziploc Baggies. We will discuss the different parts of the plant as it grows in class. Below are video's that you can watch with you child.

At home, ask your child the steps we took to get our seeds into the Ziploc Bag. Then after a few days ask what their plant looks like and have them tell you the different parts they are able to see.

Math: We are continuing with subtraction. We took the practice test on Thursday and I could tell that the way the questions were phrased gave the students trouble... This test isn't just about solving the problem and finding the difference. (For most finding the difference when given an equation is easy!) This test is about being given an equation and showing pictures that match the equation. About hearing vocabulary and understanding what they want, figuring out how to set up the equation.  About listening to a story problem and figuring out how to write the expression that matches the words... It's a lot more than just subtraction.
At home, go over your child's Math papers that are sent home!! I will give the practice test again and then take the real test. I'm planning on doing this at the end of the week, but if there are still some big confusions... I may wait until next week. :)

The students with sunglasses wore them ALL DAY!! haha It is the funniest thing to be teaching a lesson to a group that is wearing sunglasses. :)  I called on students wearing sunglasses, more than the ones not wearing them... just because I had to make sure they were paying attention and not sleeping behind their "shades." hahaha

Because Ms. Godbold and I were in the pictures... we had a student photographer take the pictures. The photographer was~ Kalli-Bo-Balli! :) Here are her pictures...

Gabriel, Carmen, Hannah, Gary, Jakayla and Gavin

The kids with Ms. Smith, Ms. Godbold and me. :)

They began to get silly...

And of course we all had to get silly! haha

Our Zoo trip was perfect!! The weather was great, the bus ride was great and the class was GREAT! :)  I also want to give a big "Thank You" to the Parents that joined us for the day: Mr. Tokarek,
Mrs. Threet, Mrs. Regalado, Mrs. Parker, Ms. Jennifer,
Ms. Hutchison and Ms. Dena.

Ms. Godbold and I were able to take pictures on the bus and during lunch, but all the other pictures came from parents. Thank you for all the pictures and enjoy the slideshow!

Before I even start this Earth Day post, I need to post this video: What a Wonderful World sung by Louis Armstrong.
 I LOVE THIS SONG!!
(I even sang along while the class watched it. haha)

Now, continuing on...
We began our day with Mrs. Noah Thomas coming for our Library Visit. :) She read the class a book about Earth Day and told them lots of facts. Then she had the class pick up garbage (clean garbage haha ) that she had scattered all through out our room. Let me repeat ALL THROUGH OUT THE ROOM, it was everywhere!! haha She ended her lesson with the class making the cutest "Litter Bugs" and then showing everyone her favorite insects... Creepy Crawly Candy. :) She brought in a candy bag for everyone.
After lunch we painted our Earth People. I LOVED watching the class use the water color paints. Mrs. Phillips (the Art Teacher) has taught them how to activate the paint with water and everyone is a painting expert. :) I have a few pictures of the painting in the slideshow, but I wasn't able to get any of the finished projects. I will add them to the post tomorrow. :)
We ended our Earth Day fun by being Campus Cleaners!!! Everyone put on gloves and then thought about team Names... One team was The Gators and the other was The Jaguars. (Unfortunately I don't remember who was on what team... so you'll have to ask your child.) It was a little tricky not screaming outside... but because of FCAT Testing we had to use regular voices and most people did great. :)

There are no Resources on Monday or Tuesday do to FCAT Testing for 5th Grade.
~Progress Report Testing will be going on all week~
Tuesday we have a visit from the Library with Mrs. Noah Thomas.
Wednesday is our Field Trip to the ZOO!!! Woohoo!!! :)
Thursday is Take Your Child to Work Day.
Please let me know if your child will be joining you. I want to mark their attendance correctly.
Friday is Sunglasses Day and we have Art with Mrs.Phillips. :)

Below is what we will be focusing on in class:

Reading: We will be reading books about Earth Day and recycling. On Tuesday we will be Campus Cleaners and pick up garbage on the Kindergarten Playground.  Our Word Family is the -an family, our blend is cr-, our vowel focus is letter i (short sound & long sound) and our new Sight Words are them, out, would, him.  Here is a link to the cr- blend power point I made. :)

At home, discuss with your child what they learned about Earth Day and what they are going to do to protect the Earth. Then discuss recycling with your child and find items in the house that can be recycled.

Writing: We are finishing up with Narratives on Easter and then we will be writing them about Earth Day. The students are doing great writing!! Most stretch every single word from the beginning through the middle down to the end. Spaces are being used continually throughout the piece. Now I am stressing the use of capitilazation at the beginning of every sentence and punctuation at the end of every sentence.
At home, please remind your child of the same items. If they are forgetting to do them, please reinforce the importance of them in their writing. :)

Science/Social Studies: We are finishing up the Unit on Living and Non-Living Things and I'm going to incorporate Earth Day into Science too. We will be making an Earth Day craft, watching an Earth Day Recycling video and having lots of discussions.
On Friday the class will be taking the Test for Living and Non-Living.

At home, discuss what living things need to survive. The differences between living and non-living plants and animals. Then review the different movements living things can do~ swim, fly, walk, run.

Math: We are continuing with subtraction. There is still a little bit of confusion... I find that the biggest trouble is remembering the number for the whole group gets written first. As soon as the students figure that out/ or are told. they can complete the equation and find the difference.

At home, continuing practicing subtraction by having your child write the equation for the problem you give them. The more you practice the easier the test will be for them... We should be taking the test in about a week.

I'm sure everyone went home today and told their parents it was the best day ever. :) The day was a ton of fun!! It began at 9:00 and didn't end until 2:40. We began with making eggs hatching out of an egg and ending with a Birthday Celebration. :)

The Egg Hunt was great!! We had wonderful "Honorary Easter Bunnies."  They did a great job hiding 278 eggs on the Kindergarten Playground. :) Then as if the day couldn't get any better... we did the most adorable crafts! The class was able to rotate between five different crafts: picture frame decorating, egg dying, bunny cup making, candy coated peep decorating and daffodil making fun!! (Thank you to all the parents that hid the eggs and stayed for the crafts!!)

I made two slideshows for you to see. The first one is of the Easter Pictures and the
second one is of all the fun we had today. :)  Have a great Easter Weekend and enjoy the pictures!

The Chia Pets have hair!!  Some have LOTS of hair and some just have a few pieces...but they are the cutest things! Everyone was so proud of their Chia Pets and they received lots of attention from EVERYONE at dismissal. :)

Anyway, because the class enjoyed the experience of watching their Chia Pets grow. I sent everyone home with a Ziploc bag of grass seed to do it again!!

Enjoy making a new Chia Pet and enjoy the slideshow!

There are no Resources this week do to FCAT Testing.
Wednesday is an Early Release Day. Lunch will be at 9:40.
Thursday is our Easter Activity Day!! Egg Hunt here we come! :)
There is no school on Friday. :)

*Make sure to turn in your easter eggs by Wednesday!!*
All week we will be sending treats to Mrs. Walker's Class and rooting them on to GREATNESS!!

Below is what we will be focusing on in class:

Reading: We will be reading the book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse one more time. (I wasn't able to finish all the retelling tests last week.) Then we will read the book The Grumpy Easter Bunny by Justine Korman and discussing the rules for our Easter Egg Hunt. We will continue practicing phoneme deletion/ substitution. Our Word Family is the -op family, our blend is br-, our vowel focus is letter e (short sound & long sound) and our new Sight Words are were, what, other, about.
I wasn't able to find a video of the book The Grumpy Easter Bunny, so I found a video for the song 'Here Comes Peter Cottontail.' :). Here is a link to the br- blend powerpoint I made. :)

When choosing books to read at home this week, find books that you may have read before and practice having your child give a retelling of the book. Their retellings should be told using the characters names and most of the events should be told in the order they occurred.

Writing: We are continuing with Narratives and we will be writing about Easter Egg Hunts. :) We will be reviewing different types of punctuation and how we can add them to our stories. (The video showcases 5 different ones, we are only focused on the period, question mark and exclamation mark.)

At home, have your child write a narrative about anything they choose. When they feel they are done, go over the sounds used to write words, spaces, and whether or not their story answers the questioning words~ Who, What Where, When, Why and How.

Science/Social Studies: We are continuing the Unit on Living and Non-Living Things. We will be discussing the different needs of living things and the different ways they move. We will be completing two worksheets one on finding living things and the other on finding the non-living things.
At home, discuss different plant and animal pictures and reasons for saying why they are living or non-living.

Math: We are going back to the Topic of subtraction. The last time we worked on subtraction, the problems dealt with taking away. The students know what to do and were able to tell me... but when it came time to doing it~ they added. So we will be working together this week on following through with what we say.
Here is the Pirate Video for Subtraction. We will be watching it every day this week. :)

At home, work on subtraction when cleaning up toys or while eating dinner. :) Make it fun so that your child doesn't even know they are learning with you!

Ch-Ch-Ch- Chia! :)
Every time I say that my mind thinks back to the commercial... so I have to post
the video that way you are singing the little tune in your head too. haha

Since we are focusing on living things and discussing their needs... I thought the best way for the students to understand them would be to grow something.  So we are in the process of growing grass seed. :) Some have said our Chia Pets look like clowns, because of their cute pom-pom nose. So we have decided that when the grass grows, it will look like hair. haha (I'm crossing my fingers everyone's Chia Pet grows hair... I would hate if one of them stayed "bald.") Everyone named their Chia Pet. The names ranged from things like Paul and Charlie, all the way down to Sparkle and Olaf. Ask your child what they named their Chia Pet. :)

The grass seed package says to predict growth in 7-10 days. So if everything goes the way it is supposed to... I will be posting the after pictures soon. :) For now, I will leave you with a slideshow of the before pictures. Enjoy!

Today we went upstairs and visited our FCAT Buddies. The class LOVES their Buddies!! Not to mention they LOVE walking up the stairs to their classroom. haha :)  We entered Mrs. Walker's classroom and everyone went straight to their Buddies desk. They handed over the picture frames and then gave them their sand art bottles and said, " I am 'sanding' you good luck!" The FCAT Buddies loved the presents and they gave the class big hugs. :) It was adorable!!

We ended our visit by telling the students we would be sending treats up to them daily and thinking about them every minute! :) Mrs. Walker then added that she would try to come visit us next Thursday after the "All clear" is given by the office (that's the code that means testing is done for the day).

~The bottles used for sand art were donated from the Cracker Barrel in Orange Park.  Without them... sand art for the FCAT Buddies would not have been possible. :) Make sure to tell them Thank You the next time you stop by. :)
Hard to believe this was the before bottle... the sand made them soooo cute! :)

Today was babysitting day or as I heard most of them say...
Thrilling Thursday!! :) haha (Mrs. Godbold came up with the saying and everyone got on the band wagon saying it too.)  The students were great listeners for Mrs.Davis when she dropped the ducklings off in the morning. They listened to her discuss what the ducklings needed: water (for drinking and playing), food & shelter. She also added what we would need to do if one of them got stuck in their pool. :) She told the class they would need to rescue them! (This made them smile, everyone wanted to be a rescuer.) Thankfully no ducklings needed rescuing. They were great getting in the pool and out of the pool all day long!

Also,  I want to give a big thank you to Mrs. Tokarek's Class,
Ms. Yergin's Class and Mrs. Hope & Ms. Lowndes' Class for stopping by our classroom. They all stopped in and checked on the ducklings while we were away at Lunch and Recess.  :)

Enjoy the slideshow below, Ms.Godbold took lots of pictures!!  :)
(ooh and don't laugh too hard when the words
"Happy Birthday" scroll across the screen...
I made the whole slideshow and then when I
previewed it noticed the words. :( And I was too
tired to make another one. Babysitting wore me out! haha.)

Resources for the week are: Music (Mon), Art (Tues), Music (Wed) and Music (Fri).
We didn't get a chance to visit the ducklings last week...
Mrs. Davis has asked if we wanted to babysit them. Ms. Godbold and I said YES!!
We are expected to babysit on Thursday. :)
Wednesday is an Early Release Day. Lunch will be at 9:40.
Friday is HAT DAY! :)

Friday is the last day to turn in money for Play Day shirts.
Don't forget to turn in your Easter Activity Donations and Field Trip Permission Slip & Money too.

Below is what we will be focusing on in class:

Reading: We will be reading the book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes. We will be working on retelling the events in the order that they happen. On Friday students will be tested on their retelling of the story. We will continue practicing phoneme deletion/ substitution. Our Word Family is the -og family, our blend is cl-, our vowel focus is letter a (short sound & long sound) and our new Sight Words are each, use, there, when.
Here is a quick video of our book. Along a link to the cl- blend powerpoint I made. :)

When choosing books to read at home this week, find books that you may have read before and practice having your child give a retelling of the book. Their retellings should be told using the characters names and most of the events should be told in the order they occurred. ~ You may notice a few of the events are told out of order, at this time the students are not penalized for that.

Writing: We are going back to Narratives. The students will be writing more complex sentences and lengthening their stories. They will choose whether to write a fiction narrative or a non-fiction one. The choice us up to the students! Everyone has strengthened their use of sounds and increased their sight word vocabulary, so I am very excited to see what everyone's writing is like. :)
At home, have your child write a narrative about anything they choose. When they feel they are done, go over the sounds used to write words, spaces, and whether or not their story answers the questioning words~ Who, What Where, When, Why and How.

Science/Social Studies: We are continuing the Unit on Plants and Animals. We will be observing pictures and discussing whether they are real or make believe plants or animals. We will also be discussing how to plant seeds and what they need in order to grow. On Thursday we will be planing grass seeds in decorated plastic cups. :)
Here are two videos~ one is a make me genius video about seeds growing and the
other is a quick 1 minute video showing grass seed growing at a time lapse.

At home, discuss what seeds/ plants need to grow and on Thursday ask your child the steps they took in planting their grass seed. :) I hope to have the grass seed cups sent home at the end of next week.

Math: We are finishing up the Topic of addition. The students have done a good job remembering the vocabulary and solving the problems. Story problems are a little difficult so we will be practicing them more in class.  We will be having our Test on Friday. (The practice test we took for Position Words was great at helping the students practice for the real test. :) So we will take the practice test on Thursday and I will send it home for you to review with your child. )
At home, review the vocabulary expression and equation. Ask your child to tell you how they are different. Then practice having them solve a problem that only gives pictures~ they will need to write the full equation.
Example:
oooo                  oo
the students will need to fill in the blanks and write the mathematical signs ( + and =)

______________          ______________                        ______________

We finished writing about Zoo Animals and the reports are adorable! The students did a great job sharing their knowledge of Zoo Animals and listening to the research I collected. :)  We then made data charts that told how the animal looks, how he moves and what he eats. The four animals we focused on were elephants, giraffes, lions and zebras.

Our Animal Charts and a slide show of Student Writing.
Be prepared to be amazed, the writing is FANTASTIC!! :)

Sorry about the purple... I started coloring the spots and was about half way done before I realized it! :(

Today the students were able to eat snack with their FCAT Buddies and play on the "big kid playground." Watching them play together was the cutest thing!!!  Other classes were out at recess~ a 1st grade, 3rd grade, 5th grade. Mrs. Walker's class made sure to sort of ignore all of them and focus on their Kindergarten FCAT Buddy.

Here is a slideshow of the kids eating snack and a
few playing of them playing on the playground.
I tried to find all of them for pictures... but it was hard! haha:)
