Below is what we will be focusing on in class:
Reading: We will be doing a close reading on the book PIGS by Gail Gibbons . We will be discussing the vocabulary the Author uses to inform us of the events happening. ALong with answering text dependent questions (questions that can only be answered by listening closely to the text.). We will continue practicing rhyming, segmenting words for sounds and for syllables, phoneme deletion/ substitution and ending sounds of words. Our Word Family is the -ap family and our new Sight Words are part, how, by, with.
When choosing a book to read with your child this week, make sure to pre-read the book and come up with questions that can only be answered if your child listens closely to the text. This can be done with a Fiction or Non-Fiction book.
Here is a video titled Pets 101 Pet Pigs
This was the only video that was appropriate to use, others were a bit too graphic. :(

Writing:Response to Literature- We will be listening to the book Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink by Diane de Groat. We will be discussing the main character and writing our opinion about him. (We will have all week to complete this for a writing grade. Here is the rubric I will be using:

__________ Writing sight words correctly

__________ Stretching words for beginning sounds

__________ Stretching words for ending sounds

                                                                 ________ Using spaces correctly

        __________ Using some punctuation correctly

__________ Picture matches opinion story

At home read your child a book and have them complete a writing piece. Address the areas they are having difficulty with and word on them. ~ For most of the students the troubles are with stretching words  for sounds and punctuation. :)

Science/Social Studies: We are discussing the night time sky and the phases of the moon. I expect to hear students say they see the moon at night and not much else. :) So we will discuss some of the different things we hear at night. Then we will watch the phases of the moon video and discuss the different moons that we have seen before.
At home, discuss the Night Time Sky with your child and the different things they can see. Then discuss the phases of the moon. The video is a little advanced the last two minutes, watch it together and be prepared for lots of questions. :)

Math: We are beginning a new Topic on Shapes. We will discuss 2D shapes and how even when their orientation is changed, the shape does not change. We will also be discussing their attributes: sides, corners, etc. Then we will compare the shapes: What attributes are the same? What attributes are different?
At home review 2D shapes with your child and have them draw each shape. Then have them describe the shapes to you and ask them to compare the shapes.
